Mother’s Nature and the Calories’trick

There is a spite that Mother Nature has done to us mere mortals, it is to make unhealthy foods so tasty and irresistible.

There is a cynic proverb explaining this: “If it’s tasty, it’s bad for ya”
And healthy food doesn’t taste anywhere near that tasty.

Well, the reason has to be found in Human Evolution.
Damn, Darwin!

Back when we were a slightly more evolved race of monkeys who roamed the steppes of East Africa all day long in search of nourishment, particularly high-calorie foods were the most valuable.

The evolutionary advantage was in the hands of the “trenchermen“: those with taste buds particularly suited to receive caloric food were naturally inclined to seek more concentrated sources of energy.

These delivered a feeling of pleasantness and satiety, which were welcomed by the brain with the release of serotonin and other hormonal responses that we also experience today.

Here, and forgive my extreme trivialization, the evolutionary clash is prefigured.

On the one hand, those who couldn’t bear high-calorie foods. Those primates had to wander day and night to feed themselves, with all the risks involved, such as falling into a ravine or being devoured by a wild beast.

On the other, those specimens of Homo Habilis and/or Erectus with particularly “hedonistic” taste buds, who are ready to indulge in the pleasures of a beehive full of honey or particularly ripe fruit.

Making story short, we descend from the latter.

However, that “feeling of guilt” that comes over us after a binge, is much more recent in human history…
